CYPRUS WEST UNIVERSITY HISTORY

Cyprus West University aims to be a distinguished and respected member of the ever-evolving higher education ecosystem in Northern Cyprus. The Ministry of National Education of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) approved its establishment on December 8, 2015, under the name “Yüksek Bilim Üniversitesi” (High Science University), and granted preliminary authorization for six undergraduate programs across three faculties. The faculties and programs authorized during the establishment phase are as follows:

Faculty of Health Sciences – Department of Nutrition and Dietetics – Department of Nursing

Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences – Department of Civil Aviation Management – Department of Business Administration – Department of Tourism and Hotel Management

Faculty of Education – Department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance

On March 30, 2017, the Ministry of National Education of the TRNC officially established the university under the name Kıbrıs Batı Üniversitesi (Cyprus West University). The completion of the university’s establishment was confirmed by a letter from the Ministry on December 8, 2017. As of March 29, 2020, Kıbrıs Batı Üniversitesi became a higher education institution affiliated with the World Foundation for Science, Education, Health, Arts, Agriculture, and Tourism (DBEST).

Teaching at Cyprus West University officially began in the 2018-2019 academic year. During this period, program preliminary approvals were obtained for the law and psychology departments. To determine the English proficiency level of students admitted to English-taught programs and to provide necessary support for those in need, a School of Foreign Languages was established, and preliminary authorization was obtained for the launch of an English Preparatory Program. Following the acquisition of the land where the university campus would be built, education commenced in the units listed below with the approval of the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation, and Coordination Council (YÖDAK) on May 18, 2018:

  1. Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences – Department of Business Administration – Department of Civil Aviation Management – Department of Psychology – English
  2. Faculty of Health Sciences – Department of Nutrition and Dietetics
  3. Faculty of Education – Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling – English
  4. School of Foreign Languages – English Preparatory Program

In its first academic year, Cyprus West University commenced operations with a total of 115 students from 13 countries, including 31 students in the fall semester and 84 students in the spring semester.
